One of the most meaningful parts of my work is stepping outside the shop and into the classroom to share the world of floriculture with students. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of participating in Career Day at School of St. Mary and at Purdue University, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. I’m especially excited for an upcoming visit to Everett Elementary School, where I’ll continue introducing young minds to the beauty and opportunity within our industry.
Floriculture is so much more than arranging flowers—it’s a dynamic blend of science, art, and business. I love showing students the full scope of what we do, from proper flower handling and processing to the creative artistry behind floral design. Every stem matters, every detail counts. Whether preparing arrangements for a wedding or designing centerpieces for an event, thoughtful planning and precision are essential.
Equally important is the ability to be flexible and thrive in a fast-paced environment. No two days are the same in a flower shop. Timelines shift, client needs evolve, and teamwork becomes the foundation of success. I always emphasize how critical it is to be a strong team member—collaborating, communicating, and supporting one another to bring each vision to life.
And while the work is demanding, it is incredibly fulfilling. There is something truly special about knowing that you—and the flowers you design—play an intimate role in life’s most meaningful moments. From birthdays and anniversaries to thank you gestures, get well wishes, sympathy arrangements, weddings, and holidays, flowers have a unique way of expressing what words often cannot.
That’s what I hope students take away: this is an industry where creativity meets purpose. Where hard work turns into something beautiful. And where every day offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact on someone’s life.
I look forward to continuing these conversations and inspiring the next generation to see the possibilities within floriculture—whether they are budding artists, future entrepreneurs, or simply curious learners discovering a new passion.
